New Sketch Card: Jesus Montero

Up to this point, all of my sketch cards have been painted. I guess that would make them paint cards. Regardless, I was a little bored watching the Giants-Redskins on Sunday (kicking myself for canceling Sunday Ticket), so I decided to occupy myself by making a card. Hmm, what to draw? I didn't feel like getting all my paints out, plus I need new brushes, so I turned to the old #2 mechanical pencil...the yellow PaperMate kind where you twist the lead from the bottom.

I have an assortment of sketch cards, as I'm still dabbling and don't know what card stock I prefer, so I grabbed one that sort of has the same texture as an Upper Deck Masterpieces card. I decided to mimic that design, and honor Jesus Montero's first career HR (and 2-HR game) as a Masterpiece because, well, it was.

It only took me about 30 minutes. I probably could have done a better job or added more detail, especially to the background, but I decided to just let it be. I think his batting stance came out well, although his helmet looks a little too big. Maybe it was one of those Marvin the Martian concussion helmets like David Wright wore. I still shy away from faces, so I just sort of shaded around it. Ugh. One day I have to tackle a face and get comfortable with it.

  1. Wow, that's good. The helmet isn't too big. Remember David Wright's helmet? That was big.

  4. Wow... I'm a huge fan of sketch cards... and this one is awesome (love the UD Masterpieces design). Sure wish I had your talent.
