Contest time! Bookmark it

It's been a long time since I've done a blog contest. The last one I did was in 2018. So with Opening Day just a few weeks away, how about another?

As many of you know, I like to take baseball card scraps and turn them into some sort of craft or artwork. I don't know why, but I've always hated to throw away baseball card packaging.

One of my favorite items made from recycled packaging are my custom, handmade bookmarks. I'm honestly not sure if anyone even uses bookmarks in 2020, but they look pretty cool:
See? These are made with actual wax wrappers from each product.

They would fit nicely in your favorite baseball book. That's where the contest comes in! The winner will receive one of my bookmarks of their choice!

Details:

Only one entry per person. All you have to do below is comment with what your favorite baseball book is. That's it! No problem if there are repeats on the list. Hopefully you'll share some that aren't too common and others will be inspired to read it too.

Contest ends Sunday, March 15 at 11:59pm PT. I'll then take all the entrants and randomly choose a winner.

I guess I need to share my favorite baseball book too, right? I don't have a no-doubt favorite book, but one that I've read in the last few years and really enjoyed is The Baby Bombers by Bryan Hoch, which details the Yankees newish approach over the last few years of developing talent and building a team that is on the cusp of a championship. What this book doesn't account for is all of those players getting hurt!
Anyways, looking forward to seeing what you all choose. Thanks for participating!

  2. Rookie by Jerry B. Jenkins. I read it in middle school and haven't thought about it much until now. Cool story about a poor kid that makes his own pitching machine that shoots golf balls at crazy speeds.

  4. There are a bunch of books about baseball cards I like, but for baseball it’s either David Halberstam’s October 1964, which I just finished and posted about on my blog, or You Gotta Have Wa, about foreigners playing baseball in Japan. I just finished Wa last week, and it’s as good for it’s insight on Japanese culture (in the 80s) as the baseball stories. Maybe 1964 is still better.

  6. I already own one of your awesome bookmarks, but if I'm eligible... I'd love to add another. My favorite baseball book is Cardboard Gods. It's not strictly a book about baseball, but it does cover baseball cards, so I hope this qualifies. If not, I'd say the 1982 American League Red Book. I learned a lot of stuff by studying the stats from these books when I was a kid.

  11. Favorite baseball book is George Will's 'Men at Work.' Came out when I was a middle schooler, and I loved reading about some of my favorite players. Must have read that book 5-6 times when I was younger.

  12. The Bad Guys Won by Jeff Pearlman. Hopefully mentioning the Mets doesn't make me ineligible. (If so, I'll buy one. These are great!!!)

  13. Just started reading The Wax Pack...probably the coolest premise for a baseball book I’ve ever read. The author buys a pack of unopened Topps from ‘86 the first year he started collecting cards. He goes on a cross country trip to visit each player in the pack to talk to them about their career and life after baseball.

  16. As an English teacher and unabashed bookworm, I approve those bookmarks. They are way cool!

My favorite book would have to be "A Great and Glorious Game" by Bart Giamatti. Fiction-wise, I think I would lean toward "Shoeless Joe."

  20. I'm going with a book I got as a kid that I loved looking at: Baseball's Best: The MVPs. Still have it, too, in my parents house. Though I think (like me) it's out of date. Thanks for running the contest and Good Luck everyone!

  24. The only books my 9 year old will read have to be baseball related. He currently has to read a biography for a school project and he is reading 2 books on Roberto Clemente. My favorite book we read together was The Hero Two Doors Down written by Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson. The Derek Jeter childrens books are also really good. My son also just got into collecting cards and has been sending out letters to players. If I win the bookmark it will go to him and I am certain it will be a prized possession. If I don't win I would love to know how you make these so we could make some ourselves. They are super cool and just the thing that could help getting him to read more.

  25. Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend

  26. Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero

The book by David Maraniss goes into what made Roberto Clemente an amazing human being more so than just being a great baseball player.

  27. The Glory of their Times is pretty great. Currently reading and enjoying "Battle of the Bay: Bashing A's, Thrilling Giants, and the Earthquake World Series."

  28. Clemente, by David Maraniss.

I've read quite a few book about baseball in the last 50 years, and I'm going with this look at the life of the Pirates HOFer.

    Good Luck everyone.

  29. Ballgame by Josh Lewin

    Great history of the Rangers

  30. Whole Different Ballgame by Marvin Miller. I’m more interested in behind the scenes baseball. Ball Four is likely close second or tied. Great post as it highlights others I hadn’t heard of that I might read (Wax Pack). And nice of you to run a contest, but disclosure I don’t need a bookmark so please exclude me so others have my entry.

  31. Great contest, and appreciate reading everyone's suggestions! Tough to choose, been reading books about bb for close to 50 years now; but going to go with "The Celebrant" by Eric Rolfe Greenberg. It's historical fiction, but depicts what it must have been like to see games played in the early 20th century. It definitely helped form my opinion on whether or not Pete R should be eligible for the HOF!
