Signed Beckett from 17 years ago

Going through a few boxes of my old stuff that I recently rescued from my parents attic, there were a few items I was hoping I’d across.
This is definitely one of them.

While I rarely send anything beyond cards in my TTM requests, here’s a Rick Ankiel Beckett I sent when he was the hottest prospect in baseball in 2000.

Ankiel was kind enough to sign and return this for me. I’m not sure if I sent it to spring training or the Cardinals – it was over 17 years ago after all. However, I remember being thrilled to get it back, and I definitely hung it in my room proudly.

Here’s a closer look at the signature.
Before he famously developed the yips, Ankiel was a huge pitching prospect. He delivered in his first full year in the Majors in 2000, going 11-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 194 Ks in 175 innings. And he was only 20! Unfortunately, that postseason is where it all fell apart for him and deprived us of a promising young lefty for years to come.

To his credit, Ankiel returned as an outfielder and even belted 25 HRs in 2008. He could have easily let the yips define his career, but he overcame them and spent seven years in the Majors as a position player. To me, that’s a success, and a true measure of character.

Listen to my voice on Beckett Radio

Here’s a bit of a shameless plus, but today I was interviewed for a few minutes on the Beckett Radio podcast. If you have a few minutes, please check it out. My segment only lasts 10 minutes or so, but the whole show is well worth it, as these guys do a great job talking about new products and relevant hobby topics. I had a great time chatting with hosts Eric and Paul.

Listen here or download in iTunes: THE LOST COLLECTOR INTERVIEW

I know there are plenty of bloggers out there who do this better than me, both from a TTM and blogging standpoint. Hopefully I represented both card bloggers and TTMers alike in a positive way.

Special thanks to Eric and Paul at Beckett for giving me a few minutes to talk TTMs, which is probably my favorite part of the hobby. Thanks goes out to the blogger formerly known as Napkin Doon for connecting me with the Beckett guys.

I think it’s clear I don’t have a future in the “on air” business. I said “you know” at least 400 times by my unofficial count. I had no clue I was doing it. Some people have a lot of “ums” or “ahhs”, but I clearly have an issue with “you know.” I hope I don’t use it that much when I’m speaking in-person, you know? (Ooops)

Regardless, it was a lot of fun and I appreciate the opportunity. Thanks for taking a listen!

The seller takes a $5 loss

The other day on a late-night eBay search, I saw a 1997 Beckett with Tino Martinez on the cover. It had a starting bid of $.65 + free shipping listed. I think I bid $.70 max. I won it...for $.65. It cost the seller $5.60 to ship...so, basically, he lost $5, especially after eBay/paypal fees.

I'm not really a magazine collector, and I do already own two copies of this issue, but I still bid for the hell of it. It's cool to see Tino on the cover during his 44 HR season. It's also fun to go back and look at what the hot cards/players at the time were, and look up BOOK VALUES.

By Beckett's account, my Phil Rizzuto collection in 1997 was WORTH well over $1,000. How about you?? Any cards you want me to look up the 1997 BOOK VALUE for? Leave it in the comments section and I'll look 'em up for you.

Tino Tuesday #38: October 1997 Beckett

Who said Tino Tuesday just needs to show off cards? I recently got a package in the mail from Ryan of "O No! Another Orioles Blog" with two old Beckett magazines featuring Tino. This is the October 1997 issue, when he graced the cover after his monster 1997 season of 44 HRs and 141 RBIs. There was also a January 1999 issue of the Yanks celebrating their 1998 World Series win.

I'm certain I had this issue back in the day, but I'm sure I have since thrown it out. I'm thrilled to have it again! I haven't had a new Beckett in well over 10 year, and this certainly brought me back. I immediately flipped through it to see what the hot cards at the time were, and it's funny to look back. Jose Cruz Jr RCs, Travis Lee, Ben Grieve, McGwire...these guys were all amongst the hottest cards out there. Just a good reminder that the next big thing isn't always guaranteed amongst all the Harper mania.

There was a really nice write-up about Tino, and his cards were basically at all-time high in terms of value. His 1988 Topps Traded RC was "valued" at $6.

It was fun to take this trip down memory lane, and I plan to highlight a lot more of the content from these magazines in future posts. Ryan, thanks again for sending these along.
