The Yankees went 0-2 this weekend. They played horrible. Their offense is a joke. But I'll always remember this weekend of baseball, as I took my son to his first game on Sunday.
First, on Saturday, I had seats of a lifetime to the Yankees-Twins game. I got super lucky to get my grimy paws on these. The Yanks played some uninspiring baseball, but taking in a MLB game from the first row behind home plate is incredibly awesome, despite the outcome of the game. I was on TV all game. Crazy.
Then, on Sunday, I took my son to his first Yankees game with my wife. It was hot as hell, in the 90s, which makes for a pretty disgusting time lugging the kid in with stroller, diaper bag, etc. It was Bat Day as well, but we planned to arrive a little late so that we could avoid the initial rush of traffic. We arrived in the bottom of the first, and luckily I was still able to get my son a bat.
We checked the stroller and made our way to our seats, which were in the first level on the third base line. Luckily, the seats were covered by the second deck, so we weren't in the sun. For the most part, he was really good. Got a bit antsy at times, but really no complaints. Ate some of my hot dog, and even had a few Dippin' Dots.
You can stop by Guest Relations as well, and the Yankees print out a "First Game" certificate with his name on it. I'm definitely going to make a cool display in his room with the bat from Bat Day, his ticket stub, and his certificate.
I won't lie. I got a little emotional when I walked into the Stadium with him. It was weird and unexpected. I know I'll take him to a lot more games, and hopefully he'll be interested in going and understand what he's seeing. But taking him to his first game was really special, and a moment I'll never forget as a father.
I collected baseball cards from the late '80s through 2002. Then I went to college and when I came out, I was lost. There were too many brands, sets, choices, relics, autos, parallels, variations. It was a turn off. However, I slowly made my way back. So here is my attempt to venture back into the hobby. I'll buy a few packs of cards here and there, comment on some cards I have, send out some TTMs, and follow the progress of my Topps Yankees Project.
Very cool moment, nice that there will be a great way to commemorate it. I've only been able to take my kids to minor league games so far, but hopefully next summer we can remedy that.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool that the Yankees print out a "first game" certificate... I wonder if they A's and Giants do it too. Anyways... great story. It's a moment you, your wife, and your son will always treasure.
ReplyDeleteAwesome story man, hopefully the next time you and your family go to see a game the Yankees can win. On the plus side at least you can tell your son that he saw his first Yankees game during Mo's last season :).
ReplyDeleteI love this post! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, hope to do that with my boys some day !!
ReplyDeleteLooks like an awesome experience!
ReplyDeleteGreat experience for you and your son! There is nothing better than taking your kids to a baseball game!
