Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra turns 90 today. Unfortunately, he hasn't been seen around Yankee Land much these days. I imagine it's getting pretty tough for him to move around these days.
About nine years ago, I had the good fortune of holding Yogi's hand for an uncomfortably long time. You see, I was at a function where he was attending. When I shook his hand, someone else started to talking to him. And Yogi didn't let go of my hand. He just kept talking to the other person while holding on to me. It was pretty funny.
I've been fortunate enough to add a Yogi TTM autograph to my collection, as well as a few nice vintage cards. However, this is likely my favorite. It was a Listia win that was well worth the credits!
I collected baseball cards from the late '80s through 2002. Then I went to college and when I came out, I was lost. There were too many brands, sets, choices, relics, autos, parallels, variations. It was a turn off. However, I slowly made my way back. So here is my attempt to venture back into the hobby. I'll buy a few packs of cards here and there, comment on some cards I have, send out some TTMs, and follow the progress of my Topps Yankees Project.

what a great memory! Yogi is my fave Yankee. So full of personality, it's no wonder he's celebrating 90 today!
ReplyDeleteGreat story! I would do an awful lot to get to meet Yogi, but I don't think it will be happening at any point in the future, unfortunately. Happy Birthday to one of the greatest men that has ever come across this game!
ReplyDeleteYogi Berra is Luis Torrens before Luis Torrens was Luis Torrens.
