JBF Epic Boxes: Pack 7

Let's show off another pack from the Jaybarkerfan Epic Boxes!

Let's start with two PC guys. I have both of these cards, but always love pulling cards of guys I collect. Two Topps flagship cards...can't so wrong.

I really like this Yogi! It's a photo I feel like I haven't many times, and the Noteworthy design is pretty cool.

A Brien Taylor Bowman gold foil RC! In the early '90s, this would have made me big bucks! I've mentioned it a few times as well, but I love these Denny's holograms. We have a family friend who used to always spoil me with a few packs of these every week.

This next card is awesome, although I'm sure at the time it wasn't quite as frowned upon as it might be now. The 60 HR Club. Will we ever see another player join it?

And the card of the pack?? A hit!! A Sterling Hitchcock jersey card, complete with a pinstripe (barely).

Contest winnings from Fuji

San Jose Fuji stole (well, he paid a little money) for some sweet 1996 Pinnacle Denny's sets from a dealer at his local flea market. He was nice enough to hold a contest for one of these sets, and somehow my name came up first. It usually comes up last in contest drawings, so I was definitely happy to win this one.

I had a lot of these cards growing up, as we had an old lady family friend who went to Denny's quite often. She's bring these cards over for me. They were always a blast to open, but I never collected a full set.

The 28-card set is full of big names. The hologram actually is a small video-type clip too. You can see a players complete swing, slide into a base, or in Ozzie Smith's case, complete back flip. It's a little different than their holograms of year's past.

I tried to scan so that you could see a snippet of the photo. Regardless, a truly awesome set from a truly awesome blogger. Thanks, Fuji!

JBF Bombs Away - Part 3

Last but not least, part three of JBF’s package bombs. I claimed the following two cards in a recent post:

But of course he didn’t leave it there. Nope. He had to throw in some sweet cards he picked up on his trip to Mobile. We’ll start with the two autos. Yep, two. First off, Bubba Crosby! Remember when Cashman said that Bubba was going to be the starting CFer? Then signed Johnny Damon out of nowhere. I did not own a Bubba auto, so this is a sweet addition.

Next up, a Steve Howe auto. Seriously?! Freakin’ sweet. The Leaf Signature Series card s signed perfectly on-card. Most of us know about Steve’s rough life and the fact that he passed away at a young age. He was a very talented reliever, and unfortunately fought with substance abuse for the majority of his career.

Well also included a team bag of Yanks, and here are a few favorites. I love any of the mid-90’s Denny’s cards, so this Boggs is money. It actually shows a short clip of his swing instead of just a 3D image.

No words necessary for this guy.

And finally, a random yanks prospect who never made it, and a guy who just participated in the NFL combine.

Denny's - 1996 Instant Replay set

I've always loved the Denny's Hologram sets. I've talked about them a few times on my blog. I'm going to try and buy all the sets here and there. I recently got a great deal on the 1996 set, these ones done by Pinnacle.

The 1996 set was called Instant Replay. Now, it's no so much a still hologram like years past, but a short movement. It's sort of a mini video. Boggs actually swings in his card. Barry Bonds slides. Ozzie Smith flips.

What's better than Denny's?

Mmmm, Denny’s on a Sunday morning. What’s better? Well, maybe Denny’s at 3am after a night of drinking. Or maybe just IHOP in general.

Anyways, Denny’s was awesome growing up because they always had baseball cards. They were always cool too – either a hologram or a sportflix-type card. Yeah, you only got one in a pack, but that made it all the more special and easier to pull someone good. Plus my grandmothers and their friends always ate at Denny’s after their bowling league, so I would end up with a few packs at once. 

These cards pop up on eBay from time to time. Sometimes they are unopened packs. Other, just singles. Rarely do they go for big bucks, so I occasionally bid. I won this particular card for $.23 shipped. It’s a 1996 Pinnacle Denny’s Wade Boggs. I believe in the years before this, Upper Deck produced these cards. This particular card is not only a hologram, but when you turn it Boggs actually swings! Mind-blowing stuff.

Denny's! Mmmmm Holograms

Growing up, I had a family friend who frequently went to Denny's. Every summer, as part of their Grand Slam breakfast deal, Denny's put out a set of cards, usually a hologram or some sort of 3D Sportflics-esque card. This family friend presented me with a pack of these cards on a weekly basis or so. I think she went there with her friends after her pals after her morning bowling league. I always enjoyed receiving these. Each team was represented, so it meant I usually got a good player. Plus I loved (and still do) holograms. I even did my sixth grade science project on holograms and even displayed some of these baseball cards and the old team logo hologram stickers that came in packs.

The other day on eBay I was searching for the Yankees from these sets, and ended up finding two unopened packs from 1995 for quite cheap. I scooped them up.

Pack one contained Moises Alou of the Montreal Expos. This probably would have been a pretty sweet card at the time, as the Expos were terrific in 1994 and Alou was a rising star.

Pack two consisted of another young stud at the time - Tim Salmon.

I was hoping for a Yankee or Frank Thomas or Griffey Jr or Ozzie Smith, but no biggie. It was fun opening these packs and bringing back flashbacks from the summer of 1995 when I'd get one of these on a weekly basis.
