Severino looking good

Yankees top pitching prospect Luis Severino has had a great start at AA Trenton. Just 21, he’s definitely beyond his years and pitching against some tough competition. So far, he’s answered the call, and already has some fans in the Bronx calling for him to join the rotation.

Me personally? I still think he needs some seasoning, but I also think he could help a bit this summer if it gets to that. It wouldn’t be outrageous, just unlikely. The Yanks have a brittle rotation. Michael Pineda is a true ace, but his shoulder scares me. I have no clue what to expect from Tanaka. CC is having a rough start. Adam Warren will have an innings limit. Nate Eovaldi seems like he’s going to be hit or miss every time out. Chris Capuano and Ivan Nova are on their way back, so there are reinforcements before it would get to Severino.

However, I’d rather see the top prospect get a shot than a guy like Kyle Davies.

Do I think we’ll see him in the Bronx this year? No. But I will see him in Hoboken, NJ, in my card collection. I’ve been slowly adding a few cards of his, and while an auto still eludes me, I like these two pickups!

These are also the first two Severino cards that I've had the opportunity to show on my blog.
Keep an eye on this guy!

  1. You can never go wrong with a Yankees prospect named Luis.

I suspect that he'll be up around 2016 (at the earliest) if all goes well.

  2. As a Yankees fan, it must be tough watching youngsters come up through the system -- it seems like ownership tends to want to trade them away for old guys more than they want to let them develop.

It may change some soon, though.

    1. Surprisingly enough that narrative that the Yankees trade away top prospects for has-beens is not really all that accurate anymore. This past offseason the Yankees made moves that brought the team's average age down mainly by trading damaged goods for really young, tall, and white pitchers and also by trading for Didi Gregorious. They still might give up a notable name here and there, but the days where they'd do something stupid like take on Albert Pujols are over. Although they will pick up has-beens for pennies on the dollar since they love their bargain pick-ups (ex. Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, Bartolo Colon, Raul Ibanez etc...).

  3. I just recently add Luis as a PC. Have you seen the prices for some of the 2015 Bowman autos on ebay? They are absolutely ridiculous.
