Previously, the oldest card in my collection was a 1951
Topps Jerry Coleman that I had signed for my Topps Yankees Project. However, I
recently replaced that card with an even older one – 1950 Bowman Frank “Spec”
Shea.
I won this card on eBay for $1.67 delivered, or about half
the cost of a pack of Heritage or $.25 less than a pack of 2012 Topps. When you
put it like that, it sounds like an absolute steal. Adding a sweet vintage
card, or get six or eight current cards? I think a lot of us would take the
vintage any time.
Sure it has a lot of creases, but the coloring is really
sharp. The cardstock is great and even has a nice cardboardy smell. The back
has a nice little description and no stats, although they didn’t quite know
what they were doing when it came to card backs in 1950.
What about you? If you had $2, would you rather pick up a
piece of vintage like this? Or roll the dice on a current pack, like 2012
Topps?
