I go through waves when it comes to acquiring vintage cards.
It's been a while since I snagged a "new" one. So I turned to my trusty eBay saved search for "poor" Yankees cards, and came across this:
Nothing about that looks poor, does it? It's in great condition.
The poor actually comes from paper loss on the back, which looks like it was probably tape of some sort. Maybe some kid hung this up in his bedroom.
I've certainly spent $1.75 on cards far poorer than this. Since this will go in my vintage binder, I'm not worried about the paper loss on the back at all.

I collected baseball cards from the late '80s through 2002. Then I went to college and when I came out, I was lost. There were too many brands, sets, choices, relics, autos, parallels, variations. It was a turn off. However, I slowly made my way back. So here is my attempt to venture back into the hobby. I'll buy a few packs of cards here and there, comment on some cards I have, send out some TTMs, and follow the progress of my Topps Yankees Project.

A wrinkly old rookie
It's been a long time since I picked up a beat up vintage card that I otherwise wouldn't be able to afford. However, when this 1955 Bowman Elston Howard RC popped up for basically no money, I decided it would be cool to add the rookie card of a key Yankee from the '50s and '60s.
Howard gets overshadowed by guys like Mantle and Maris and Berra, but he was a hell of a player. It's easy to forget he was the 1963 AL MVP. He was also the first African American player on the Yankees. He won four World Series rings as a player, and two more as a coach. His life was cut far too short, as he passed away at age 51 in 1980.
I was surprised to see that he never got more than 21% of the Hall of Fame vote. His stats now don't look great, but there's no doubt he was one of the better players on a remarkable team, and played a demanding position, playing it well. Perhaps that isn't enough to make it to Cooperstown, but it was plenty for a spot in Monument Park in the Bronx. Maybe that's enough.

eBay Bargin Bin: 1962 Post Elston Howard
I've mentioned before than once in awhile, eBay can act like a bargain bin for those of us who don't have an LCS, local shows, or are lucky enough to go to the National.
It's doesn't happen much, but there are cheap, bargain bin-esque deals to be had!
I won this well-loved 1962 Post Elston Howard for $.17 plus $.50 shipping. Definitely the type of card I would snag in a bargain bin. These deals don't come up frequently, but when they do, it feels damn good.

The PWE of all PWEs
Mark H recently sent me the PWE of all PWEs. It contained 18 cards...all vintage! Cards ranged from 1959-1965. I love PWEs because there tends to be a bit of everything in there, but this one was just one vintage treasure after another.
Best of all, I honestly think I needed every one of these cards. I need to take inventory on my Yanks from the '60s. I don't have many at all, but should start keeping track and trying to put together some Mantle-less team sets.
I'm not sure which card is my favorite of the bunch. I like the Rollie Sheldon a lot. In fact, I've already sent it out to him TTM. The 1964 Elston Howard is sweet, as well as the 1962 Jake Gibbs. I think that is my first Tony Kubek card too. I have the 1959 Virgil Trucks, but it's autographed. I don't believe I had it unsigned, so love adding it back to my collection.
Mark, thank you as always!

Purchase Review: Elston Howard Game Used Jersey
Right now I don't have any real collecting goals. There are a few insert sets I'm trying to collect, as well as keeping up with my TTMs and my project. Since my want list is minimal, I'll always ask for Yankee cards in a trade. Love getting them. Lately while surfing eBay, I've been gravitating toward Yankee relics and vintage Yankee cards. My newest acquisition is a bit of both.
Four a couple bucks, I picked up this 2005 Donruss Greats Elston Howard Clippings jersey card. I love getting older Yankee relics. This jersey was worn in the '50s or '60s! Cool, right? It's road gray, and it's a pretty dark gray. The picture isn't great - it's darker than it looks. I'll have to compare it to the current road jerseys, but I think it's quite a bit darker. It's not quite as cool as the cream-colored home jerseys, like the Mize I have, but it's a great swatch of a Yankee great.
